mission

This mission link is not about what one church can give to the other but about walking together in faith, learning from one another, and growing together as part of Christ’s body worldwide.

At Emmanuel Church, Plymouth, we are passionate about living out our faith not only in our own city but also through building meaningful partnerships with the worldwide church. As part of the Diocese of Exeter, we are connected with the Diocese of Thika in Kenya and the Diocese of Cyprus and the Gulf. These links remind us that God’s family is wonderfully diverse and spread across the globe.

We are delighted to share that Emmanuel has formed a special relationship with St Monica’s Church, Mugumo-ini, in Thika, Kenya. St Monica’s is a lively, multilingual congregation whose worship reflects the beauty of God’s kingdom. Services are held in English, Kiswahili, and Kikuyu, enabling people of all generations and backgrounds to come together in praise.

The church is especially blessed with a thriving children’s and youth ministry. So many young people attend that St Monica’s is currently completing the construction of a two-story building – providing much-needed Sunday school classrooms and meeting spaces for adults. This growth is a powerful sign of God’s work among them.

In May this year, three members of our congregation travelled to Thika to visit St Monica’s. They were warmly welcomed by staff and parishioners and had the chance to witness first-hand the life and ministry of the church within its community. We hope this is just the beginning: plans are underway for members of St Monica’s to visit Emmanuel, and for our Youth Group to one day experience their own Kenyan adventure.

Our partnership is grounded in mutual prayer and encouragement. Though separated by miles and shaped by different cultures, we stand together in Christ. We share in the universal human experiences of hope and despair, loneliness and community, joy and praise—and we are united in the saving love of Jesus and the promises of God’s Word.
