Christianity has been part of African history for a very long time—much earlier than many people realise. One of the earliest recorded stories describes an Ethiopian official who encountered the faith and brought it back home. Over the centuries, Christian texts were translated into local African languages such as Coptic (from the 2nd century) and Ethiopic (from the 4th century), and later into Arabic (8th century). This all happened long before translations appeared in early
